Barbara Priddy Guyer

1993 Inductee

Barbara Priddy Guyer traveled an academic path from a reading teacher in elementary school and at a women’s prison to a Marshall University professor of education and founder of H.E.L.P. (Higher Education for Learning Problems) Program. Her innovative program gave otherwise bright, hardworking students with learning disabilities the boost they needed to succeed.

Guyer's work has been nationally recognized. In 1987 and 1988, she was honored by Newsweek Magazine for her innovative work with young people. Her knowledge of learning disabilities made her a valued speaker for professional societies across the country and abroad.

She wrote numerous articles and presented countless papers on learning disabilities, and her work with the medical field has resulted in greater awareness of the need for early identification of children with learning disabilities.
