Clifford Carwood Lipton (1920-2001) was born in Huntington on Jan. 30, 1920. After completing one year at Marshall University, Lipton enlisted in 1942 and joined the paratroopers at Fort Thomas in Newport, Kentucky. Lipton rose rapidly through the ranks and became Easy Company's First Sergeant. His honors and awards include two Bronze Stars (second Bronze Star represented by Oak Leaf Cluster), three Purple Hearts (second and third represented by Oak Leaf Clusters), WWII Victory Medal, three Presidential Unit Citations (second and third represented by Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Orange Lanyard of the Royal Netherlands Army. Shortly after D-Day, Lipton was recognized by the officers of Easy, the 101st Division and the 506th Regiment.
This Huntington native served with distinction during WWII as a member of Easy Company at the Battle of Normandy Battle of the Bulge and Utah Beach. He provided commentary for the HBO series "Band of Brothers" and was a central figure in Episode 7. His character was played by actor Donnie Wahlberg.
Posthumously in 2018, his name was entered into the Congressional Record by U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins, citing his courage and leadership. "First Lt Carwood Lipton was an ordinary man who did extraordinary things." On July 1, 2018, Linden Circle (where Lipton lived in Huntington) was renamed Lipton Circle and the date was proclaimed Carwood Lipton Day in Huntington by Mayor Steve Williams.
