Charles L. Ripper

1989 Inductee

Few of our natural resources are as precious as our wildlife and few individuals have done as much to protect and preserve wildlife as Charles R. Ripper.

One of America's top illustrators, Ripper has used his talents to express his love and concern for nature. He has written and illustrated 11 books on nature and nearly 100 magazine covers and 24 books have used his art. Ripper has painted more than 400 conservation stamp paintings for the National Wildlife Federation.

Since he was commissioned by the U.S. Postal Service in 1980, Ripper has designed 68 postal stamps. Two issues, Coral Reefs and American Wildlife, were voted the most popular issues of the year by stamp collectors. The magnitude of Ripper's enthusiasm, skill and knowledge of nature can be matched only by the beauty of his work.
