Following his ordination in 1953. The Reverend Dr. R.F. Smith Jr. served several congregations in his home state of North Carolina before he became senior minister of Huntington's Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in 1979. An outstanding pastor, religious leader and community servant, he soon became well known in the city for his inspired preaching and involvement with needy causes. His words and actions guided the lives of thousands.
Dedicated to the needs of education, health care and the underprivileged, he was a leader and worker whose unique qualities and positive, caring attitude enabled him to become a friend to many different people. His contribution and involvement in Habitat for Humanity began when he met former President Jimmy Carter.
Some time later, following a speaker's presentation on Habitat for Humanity, Dr. Smith faced the 85 men present and said, "I challenge you to build a house." In less than 3 months, a house was built. Plans were then launched for another house to be built in 1993 and one every three years thereafter.
