Glenn J. Queen

1990 Inductee

The world Glenn Queen returned to after his discharge from the Marine Corps in 1945 was one of shortages and rationing. A world where at times a cup of sugar was worth a king's ransom. To Queen, this was not a world of shortages, but a world of challenges. To meet his customers’ basic needs, he journeyed weekly to Cleveland, Ohio, to bring home meat, soap, lard and sugar. This earned Queen a loyalty among his customers that was paramount in the success of his Tradewell grocery chain.

Queen dedicated his efforts to many organizations including the American Cancer Society, the Huntington Museum of Art and the United Way. He was always a generous supporter of Marshall University and was the first individual contributor to the Society of Yeager Scholars.

However, Queen's kindness was not limited to his friends. A soldier who, while serving in South Vietnam, received a box of cookies from Queen summed it up by saying, "We all have our family and friends who we know are with us, but when someone you have never met cares enough to do something to let you know it, it sure gives the morale a boost."
