J. Churchill Hodges (1925-2011) was born in Huntington and is the son of Frank and Amine Hodges. He attended Marshall Laboratory School and graduated from Kentucky Military Institute in 1943. He earned an A.B. degree in chemistry from Marshall College in 1948 and a master's degree in geography in 1953. He served in the Army during World War II.
Hodges spent 36 years as an educator in Cabell County. He believed education changed lives. He established the J. Churchill Hodges Summer Science Scholarship program, provided funds for the Marshall Libraries, the Geography Department GIS Laboratory, the president's home and the Alumni Center.
His civic involvement included president of the Engineers Club, member of the Huntington Rotary Club, Paul Harris Fellow, Marshall University Foundation, Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation, Huntington Museum of Arts and Ronald McDonald House. He received the Drinko Distinguished Service Award.
