James & Shirley Funderburk

1993 Inductee

Under the direction of the husband and wife team of Reverend James and Shirley Funderburk, the Huntington City Mission extended hope and help to more than 15,000 people each year. Through their leadership that the City Mission developed programs dedicated to helping those in need become functioning members of the community.

They operated the City Mission in Matthew, Chapter 25 of the Bible: "For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you made me feel welcome; naked and you clothed me; sick and you visited me; in prison and you came to see me."

The Funderburks not only reached out to the needy and homeless through the City Mission but also through their work as humanitarians. They inspired their many volunteers and increased public support for their efforts. Where many closed their hearts and minds to the despair of the hungry and unfortunate, the Funderburks willingly answered the call to serve.
