Rabbi Dr. David E. Wucher

Rabbi Dr. David E. Wucher was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1945. He graduated Cum Laude from Brandeis University in 1966 and attended Hebrew Union College Rabbinic School in Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating at the top of his class.

After his ordination in 1972, Wucher entered the U.S. Army as a chaplain with the rank of captain. He is an active member of the American Legion and of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA. In 1975, he married Victoria "Tori" Behar. They have two daughters, Glenda and Aliza, and three grandchildren.

After serving congregations in Missouri for some years and obtaining his doctorate in Hebrew literature, Wucher started serving the Tri-State in 1989 when he became the rabbi of B'nai Sholom Congregation.

He served as rabbi for more than 22 years, becoming the longest-serving rabbi in the congregation's history, and continues to serve as Rabbi Emeritus. He taught classes at Marshall University on the Holocaust, the Jewish way of life, the Hebrew prophets and classical Hebrew language.

He was a founding member of the West Virginia Holocaust Education Commission under Gov. Cecil Underwood. Wucher has served on the boards of numerous local organizations such as Rotary Club, Hospice of Huntington, TEAM for WV Children, B'nai B'rith Lodge and others. After retirement, he became a Civil War "Living Historian" - he plays Rabbi Ferdinand Sarner, the only rabbi to serve as a chaplain in the Union Army.
