Dr. Alan B. Gould’s dedication to education and his community started early in his career. In 1983, he served on the steering committee for the Ethics West Virginia Program and chaired the Great Books Committee. He served as president of the West Virginia Humanities Council from 1990 to 1992 and in 1996 was the recipient of its Charles H. Daugherty Award in the Humanities.
In a variety of capacities for the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Memorial Foundation, Dr. Gould played a prominent role in obtaining the recognition that Dr. Woodson justly deserved.
Dr. Gould served Marshall University in a number of administrative capacities including Chair of the Department of History. Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Dr. Gould was Interim President of Marshall University from 1990-1991 and his achievements during that year were outstanding and noteworthy.
In 1994, he became the executive director of the John Deaver Drinko Academy at Marshall.
