Jeffrey George, M.D.

2010 Inductee

Dr. Jeffrey George was born in 1958 in Huntington and graduated from Huntington High School and Duke University. He received his medical education at West Virginia University and was a resident at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. He also practiced medicine at the University of Louisville before he returned to Huntington. 

George’s honors and awards included Baird Memorial Surgical Research Award in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989; Best Doctors in America Midwest Division in 1995, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006; Commonwealth of Kentucky Colonel 2002; Distinguished West Virginian in 2007; and Virginian Service Award in 2008. 

His appointments included director of cardiothoracic surgery and chief of surgery, president medical and dental staff at St. Mary's Medical Center. He also served as president of the St. Mary's Medical Center Foundation. He was the namesake and founder of the Dr. Jeffrey E. George Comfort House in Huntington, which provides a place to stay for family members of those who are hospitalized. It opened in February 2000 and hosts hundreds of families annually.

George and his daughter, Hannah, were tragically killed in an automobile accident in December 2008.
