Maurice A. Mufson, M.D.

Dr. Maurice A. Mufson was born in New York, New York on July 7, 1932. He was educated at Stuyvesant High School, Bucknell University and the New York University School of Medicine. He served his Internal Medicine Residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York and at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the National Institute of Health.

Dr. Mufson moved to Huntington in 1976 to become the founding chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine of the new Marshall University School of Medicine. During the next 24 years, he pioneered the development of the Department of Internal Medicine and built it into a strong and well-staffed department with a full range of educational programs, research investigations and clinical services that achieved national recognition. His research gained national and international recognition for studies of viral and bacterial pneumonia.

His awards include Mastership in the American College of Physicians, the Solomon A. Berson Alumni Achievement Award in Health Science from New York University School of Medicine, Marshall University Meet-the-Scholar Award, Marshall Sigma-Xi Society Outstanding Researcher of the Year and the Laureate Award of the West Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Mufson served three years as president of the Board of Trustees of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra. Under his guidance, the Orchestra emerged to full symphony status, increased its number of concerts and enlarged its audience.
