Revella E Hughes

1988 Inductee

Known as the “Sophisticated Lady of the Organ,” Hughes began her musical career at the age of 5 when she learned how to play piano. A nationally-acclaimed concert organist, singer and musical director of the Broadway stage, Hughes was devoted to the study, execution and appreciation of every phase of instrumental and vocal music.

During her career supervising public school music in Huntington, Hughes instilled this same devotion in her students as well as members of the community. In 1985, Marshall University conferred upon Hughes the honorary degree of Doctor of Music.

In addition to her incredible talent and love for music, Hughes had a personal warmth that touched the hearts of those she encountered. “I never sang blues, because I’m always happy,” Hughes once stated.
