Robert C. Chambers

1999 Inductee

Robert C. “Chuck” Chambers was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates where he served nine consecutive terms. From 1987 to 1996, he served as Speaker of the House, giving him the longest tenure in that post in our State's history. Speaker Chambers' legislative service was highlighted by his leadership in pursuing fiscal responsibility, enhancement of higher education, economic development, environmental protection and governmental ethics.

Among his contributions to the Huntington, community was state funding for various new facilities at Marshall University, including a football stadium, library, science building, and performing arts center. He also spearheaded higher education reforms and budget increases which led to increased funding for Marshall. Speaker Chambers proposals to create the statewide infrastructure bond program and restructure the state's economic development office have contributed to Huntington's economic development efforts.

Chambers presided over the House of Delegates during one of the most productive and progressive eras in the history of state government. In 1997, at the urging of United States Senator Robert C. Byrd, Chambers was appointed to the United States District Court, the first Huntingtonian named to that position. He has five children, most notably a handsome and highly-intelligent son named Bryan.
