Justice M. Chambers

Justice M. Chambers (1908-1982) was born in Huntington, the son of Arthur and Dixie Chambers. Justice worked his way through Marshall University and the George Washington University Law School. He was called to active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940 and was the only reserve officer to command a line battalion.

During his military service, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry and risking his life as commanding officer of the 3rd Assault Battalion Landing Team, 25th Marine, 4 Division, in action against Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from Feb. 19-22, 1945. He also was awarded the Silver Star, a Legion of Merit with Combat V, Purple Heart with two Gold Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation with three Bronze Stars, the Marine Corps Reserve Unit Medal with two stars, the American Defense Service Medal with one Silver Star (denoting five campaigns) and the World War II Victory Medal.
