Ruth Layne Cline

1995 Inductee

A West Virginia native, Ruth Layne Cline (1935-2018) prepared for a career directed toward service to others through degrees earned at Morris Harvey College and Marshall University.

Her years as executive director of Family Service Inc. and of the United Way of the River Cities are testimony to Cline’s belief in helping others. During her 14-year tenure with the United Way, she raised more than $17 million for local charities. In 1991, the West Virginia Society for Fund Raising Executives recognized Cline as the West Virginia Professional Fundraiser of the Year. One of the state's most enthusiastic fundraisers, Cline also directed efforts of the Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation.

On March 29, 1994, West Virginia Governor Gaston Caperton presented Cline with the Distinguished West Virginian Award and Huntington Mayor Jean Dean proclaimed the day as Ruth Cline Appreciation Day. She believes that creative thinking and hard work accomplish miracles.
