Roberta Shinn Emerson was appointed as director of the Huntington Galleries (now the Huntington Museum of Art) in 1971. She brought to the position an extensive background in art education and years of service in organizations devoted to the advancement of art. “I can’t remember when I wasn’t interested in art,” she would later recall.
Under her leadership, the Galleries grew in both size and stature. What was once a small, struggling institution is today a first-class museum that is a hub for the arts and culture in Huntington.
